Our position. teesrition is an independent information service for mobile customers in the United Kingdom. We are not a mobile network. We have no affiliation with, endorsement from, appointment by or connection to Three, EE, O2, Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile or any other provider, and no commercial arrangement with any of them. We do not sell, supply, arrange or broker SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind, and we take no commission from anybody. Everything here is general information; a provider's own current terms always take precedence.

The three ways to get a phone

Routes
RouteWhat it meansWho uses it
Combined bundleHandset and airtime as one monthly figure; does not fall at term endMost networks
Split contractDevice credit ends at repayment; airtime billed separatelyO2, Sky Mobile
Outright plus a SIMNo credit agreement at all; money needed upfrontAnyone
Do this
  • Establish which route you are being offered before comparing prices.
  • Use the outright route as your benchmark even if you do not take it.
02

The calculation that settles everything

Maths

Cost slides between the upfront payment and the monthly figure like a see-saw. That is exactly why two shops can show completely different structures for the same handset and both call theirs the cheapest.

  1. Add the upfront payment to the monthly charge multiplied by the number of months.
  2. Work out the same phone bought outright plus the cheapest suitable SIM, over the same period.
  3. Take whichever total is smaller.
  4. Value any bundled earbuds or watch at what you could genuinely resell them for.
Do this
  • Write both totals down before discussing anything else.
  • Ignore accessories you would never have bought.
03

The month people begin overpaying

The trap

Nothing happens automatically when a minimum term ends. On a combined bundle you carry on paying for a handset you already own, indefinitely. On a split contract the device payment does stop — but the airtime continues at full price until you reduce it.

WarningDiary the end date on the day you sign, with a reminder a month before. That single calendar entry is worth more than any comparison website.
Do this
  • Within days of the end date: move to SIM-only, upgrade deliberately, or leave.
  • Treat any upgrade offer as a brand-new contract restarting the clock.

Cooling-offA free trial of the network as well as the phone
Do this
  • Take two trade-in quotes.
  • Test signal at home and at work room by room inside the returns window.
  • Test the battery across several ordinary days, not one charge.
  • Keep packaging complete until you have decided.
