Picking a length

Choosing

The gap between a rolling monthly plan and a two-year one is usually a few pounds. That is not really what you are choosing between.

What a rolling plan buys is the right to walk away — if the signal disappoints, if you move, if your circumstances change.

Your situationSensible choice
A new address you have never lived atRolling
A network you have never usedRolling
A job or living arrangement that may changeRolling
Settled home, signal already provenFixed term
Several people on one accountFixed term, with multi-line reductions
Do this
  • Ask whether anything about your situation is unproven.
  • If yes, take rolling and treat the extra few pounds as insurance.
  • Price the household as a whole rather than line by line.
02

Working out the allowance

Sizing

Nobody needs to guess this. Your provider's app records exactly what you used, and three months covers holidays, unusual weeks and everything else.

Buy that measured average with a little headroom. The recorded gap between what people believe they use and what they actually use runs at roughly double — across a two-year contract that is a serious sum spent on nothing.

Do this
  • Open your app and read three months of recorded usage.
  • Buy that average with modest headroom.
  • Cover an unusual month with a one-off add-on, not a permanent upgrade.
03

Making a smaller allowance stretch

Saving

Two changes cost nothing and usually achieve more than upgrading would: dropping video quality one step, and moving backups onto home Wi-Fi.

Do this
  • Drop video quality one step inside the streaming app.
  • Restrict backups, photo sync and app updates to home Wi-Fi.
  • Switch off autoplay video in social feeds.
  • Download anything you will watch twice rather than streaming it twice.
04
